Welcome to our BFI Film Academy Short Course (North East), a prestigious programme in partnership with the British Film Institute, offering young people elite film training.
Over 70 hours of free specialist workshops, guest speakers and hands-on filmmaking, participants master advanced filmmaking techniques (in cinematography, directing/producing and film design) to create a final film. Workshops and production dates run on selected weekends, led by industry professionals, using cutting-edge equipment. At the end of the course, students produce a complex short film with significant autonomy, to premiere at The Customs House in North Shields.

No Cost For You: The course is fully funded, with bursaries available for travel and childcare to ensure everyone can participate.
Suited for ambitious, creative young people passionate about film and eager to learn professional techniques and industry roles. These workshops appeal to young filmmakers who thrive on leadership and want to create high-quality cinematic work. BFI classes welcome dedicated kids aiming for industry-standard skills.
BFI workshops develop advanced filmmaking skills, preparing teenagers (age 16-19 or up to 25 with EHCP) for careers in the creative industries. The Big Film is an annual film project which helps young people explore their confidence, community and creativity through acting and filmmaking. We help pupils craft their own exciting films. With professional teacher training, classroom resources and ongoing technical support, we aim to enrich young people’s learning.Â
